Naples, Pompeii, Sorrento, & Capri Wednesday Day 4

I would have to say this was probably my favorite stop out of all of the ports we went to.  Pompeii was incredible. Sorrento was a place I could live or stay at for a long time and Capri, well during our short 45 minute stay  it was breathtaking.  There was absolutely no way we could have seen all of the sights in one day.  I don’t even know why I wrote Naples, except that it is where our shipped ported.  We never really had time to walk around Naples except to get on the bus and then the train.

O.K.  The adventure begins:

We started in Pompeii to see the famous ruins. The ruins were amazing because the volcano Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD and buried Pompeii under ash and rock, which kept things in such great shape. The origins of the city are uncertain; the oldest reports date from the end of the 7^th and the first half of the 6^th century. BC.  This ancient city with all of its marvelous excavations was definitely the highlight of the trip.  We were able to walk throughout the city for about 3 ½ hours. We could see how the neighborhoods and blocks were formed.  It was incredible to really get a glimpse of what that time period was like. 

In the afternoon we dragged ourselves out of Pompeii so we could head to Sorrento and get a late lunch.  Food……oh this was the best food we had on the trip.  Sorrento also had picturestic views along with a peaceful and beautiful atmosphere.

Next we went on a ferry from Sorrento to Capri, which only took a few minutes.  Unfortunately the clock was ticking and we only had a short time to Capri.  We took a taxi ride up to the top (since we thought it would be faster…not).  We took some great pictures at the Gardens of Augustus to see the great view of the rocky island of Faraglioni.  We then took the funicular railway to get back to the bottom so we could take the Hydrofoil back to Naples (about 20 miles).  What a day!

Forum: This was the cities main square. It was surrouned on all sides by religious, political, and business buildings.

Bisilica: built to create monuments throughout the city. At the back is the tribunal, where the magistrates sat. The building was dedicated to administering justice and for business negotiations.

Garden of the fugitives: This houses the plaster casts of a few of the victims from 79 AD, overcome by the fury of the eruption while they sought an escape.

Porta Ercolano:Necropolis- Where the dead were cremated and the ashes stored in an urn walled into the tomb, or buried and indicated with a marker in the shape of a human bust.


The great theatre- this theatre takes advantage of the natural slope of the land to create the tiers of seats. The theater could hold approx. 5,000 spectators.

Amphitheater: one of the oldest and best preserved amphitheaters in existence, and held over 20,000 spectators.
